Lord of the Mysteries (LotM) is a webnovel that blends horror, fantasy, steampunk, and mystery. The story takes place in an alternate Victorian-era world, where the rising tide of steam power and machinery is accompanied by the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears. This novel is a must-read for any fan of the genre, with its intricate world-building, multi-layered plot, and engaging protagonist.
Introduction
Web novels are increasingly gaining popularity, and Lord of the Mysteries is one of the most intriguing and engaging web novels out there. Written by the Chinese author, Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, and translated into English by translator, Atlas Studios, Lord of the Mysteries has over 1.798 million words and over 1400+ chapters (plus a second book in the series coming). In this blog post, I'll discuss why Lord of the Mysteries is worth reading and why it stands out from other web novels.
The World-Building
One of the most impressive aspects of Lord of the Mysteries is its intricate world-building that sets it apart from other web novels. The novel is set in a steampunk-inspired world full of magic, mystery, and danger. The protagonist, Klein Moretti, is a member of a secret society that investigates and deals with supernatural occurrences. The history and mythology of this world, as well as the various factions and organizations that inhabit it, are explored throughout the novel. The attention to detail in the world-building is impressive, and it's clear that the author has put a lot of thought into creating a rich and immersive setting.
The Plot
The multi-layered plot of LotM is full of twists and turns that keep the reader engaged throughout the story. Klein's investigations take him on a journey that leads him to uncover a grand conspiracy that threatens the entire world. Along the way, he encounters a diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations and secrets. The pacing of the story is just right, with each revelation and plot twist building on what came before. The mystery at the heart of the novel is compelling and adds to the overall suspense of the story.
The Protagonist
Klein Moretti is one of the most well-written and interesting protagonists I’ve read in a long time. He's intelligent, resourceful, and has a dry sense of humour that makes him an entertaining character to read about. While he's not a flawless hero, he's a likeable and relatable character whom readers will root for throughout the story. His growth and development over the course of the novel are well-done, and his relationships with the other characters evolve in realistic and satisfying ways.
🔍 How I Discovered It
As a big fan of web novels, I was searching for a new book to read after finishing the massive web novel, Worm. That's when I stumbled upon Lord of the Mysteries. The book was described as a mix of eldritch Victorian fantasy with mystery, which immediately caught my attention.
🧠 Thoughts
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I recently finished reading Lord of the Mysteries, and I must say, it's a remarkable book that deserves a 5-star rating. The plot is well-thought-out and progresses at a steady pace, the world-building is intricate and immersive, and the protagonist is engaging and relatable.
However, I do acknowledge that some readers may find fault in the slow burn of the opening and first arc of the book. It takes time to set the stage for the story, which may not appeal to readers accustomed to a faster pace. Nonetheless, for those willing to invest the time, the story picks up significantly after chapter 150, making the initial commitment well worth it.
